Walking for Suicide Awareness

Lancaster, KY

My name is Matthew Maloy. I am an Army veteran with 17 years of service, three of which were in Iraq. During my deployments, I developed a brain tumor, broke my neck and back, tore my labrum and damaged both knees, as well as many other issues associated with my military service. On Oct. 8, 2023, my life completely changed when I was notified by the Marine Corps that my son, CPL Maloy, Colton, had died by suicide.

One night, several months after his death and when the fog started to lift, I had a dream which has set me on my current course. I dreamt about Forrest Gump running through the desert. He encouraged me to run with him. When I told him I couldn’t run, Lt. Dan yelled, “But you can walk!” It was then that I knew what I needed to do to heal my own heart, honor Colton and bring awareness to veteran suicide.

Starting April 2024, I will be walking northwest from Kentucky to Portland, Ore. then back southeast to Camp Lejeune, N.C. My journey is broken into four legs.
Leg 1 - Kentucky to Iowa (667 miles)
Leg 2 - Iowa to Portland, Ore. (2,000 miles)
Leg 3 - Portland, Ore. to Brasstown, N.C. (3,140 miles)
Leg 4 - Brasstown, N.C. to Camp Lejeune, N.C. (461 miles)

Though it was unintentional, when you reduce the miles, it equals 22. Each day, 22 veterans die by suicide.

I will be chronicling my journey, and though my medical issues may slow me down, it will not deter me from sharing the story of my amazing son Colton and giving hope to others who are suffering with mental health issues. I desire to not only spread suicide awareness, but also be a listening ear to veterans and others who are struggling, let them know they are not alone and that there are countless options for help.

I know I will not be able to do this on my own, and though I have always had a hard time accepting help, I’m humbly asking for support and encouragement while I walk to bring awareness to veteran suicide. There is no question I must do this in my son’s honor. I am locked on my goal of completing this endeavor. Thank you all for your support!

Regards,

SFC Maloy, Matthew B. (Retired)
