AUSTIN, Texas – (July 20, 2023) – Five delegates from Fred Brock American Legion Post 828, 20th District, located on the eastside of San Antonio, attended the 104th Annual Convention of the Department of Texas, held at the Renaissance Austin Hotel July 10-16.
.
On July 15, various posts from throughout the department received numerous membership awards.
Post 828 was recognized for the following: All-Time High, Post Recruiting Award, Post Retention Award (90% or more), Post 100% Award and the coveted Post Excellence Award.
Additionally, Post 828 received first-place plaques in the Post History Contest (Narrative) and Press Scrapbook.
“The awards received during the department convention are a testament of the hard work the Legionnaires and members of the Fred Brock American Legion Family have done,” said Post Commander Burrell Parmer. “Special thanks to the executive committee and board of trustees for following and executing my vision of making our post better and better each day.”
During the Department of Texas’ Media Awards, the San Antonio Observer was announced as the top winner in the Weekly Newspaper Category.
“The San Antonio Observer has been instrumental in telling our story throughout the city,” said Parmer, who serves as the City of San Antonio’s District 2 representative for the Veterans Advisory Commission. “Without their continuing support, many of our veterans and military members would not be aware of the post.”
According to Parmer, posts are encouraged to submit local media outlets in one of the four categories that support The American Legion by providing positive news coverage of various posts.
“From June 2022 to May 2023, the San Antonio Observer has been a champion for the post in informing the San Antonio community about the post’s activities and program,” said Parmer. “The articles published throughout the year have contributed to a significant increase in new Legionnaire membership.”
The mission of Fred Brock Post 828 is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s veterans, their families, the military and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
