On an island like Oahu, Hawaii, with eight military installations filled with military personnel of all branches, one would imagine there is a queue of personnel knocking at the doors of our American Legion posts to sign up. Unfortunately, there seems to be a pervading attitude among the younger generation of veterans currently serving or who have served that our Legion consists of a bunch of old people sitting at a bar talking war stories. In Hawaii, we are far removed from that. We were successful in gaining new membership at a venue Post 17 from Honolulu had not previously attended: our Hawaiian Scottish Association's annual Highland Games. The Legion was welcomed and hosted a table at the games held April 5-6, 2025, in Waikiki. We were fortunate to recruit several members into our post, including some band members from the only marching pipe band in the state of Hawaii, the Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawaii. It was very successful and quite enjoyable for the Legion members manning the table, letting our community know who we are and what we do for veterans in the state of Hawaii. Future plans are to host a table at the Pearl Harbor Naval Exchange, one of the largest military exchanges in the world, and at Schofield Barracks Post Exchange on central Oahu. All our members are enthusiastic and extremely supportive of all our veterans on our populated islands. We are often asked about The American Legion and have been proactive in attaining memberships.
