On May 24, 2024, Lewis L. Millet American Legion Post 38 held their annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Yanghwajin Foreign Cemetery, Mapo Ward, Seoul, South Korea. Officers from the Korean Veterans Association joined with the Legionnaires for the ceremony. A U.S. flag was planted by each grave of the 27 U.S. veterans buried at the cemetery.
The event began with remarks from Post 38 Commander William Scafe. “A thousand battles of land, sea and air echo the glory of their valiant deeds. Under the quiet sod, or beneath the murmuring waves, their bodies sleep in peace. But in the destinies of veterans, their souls go marching on. Because of them, our lives are free. Because of them, our nation lives.”
The adjutant read the name of each veteran at the grave, and a salute was rendered, followed by a bow before the contingent moved to the next grave. After visiting the final grave, Commander Scafe made his final remarks followed by a prayer by the chaplain.
