On a bright Memorial Day morn
While jogging down a farm road
I glimpsed our Flag suspended from a mailbox

As I passed it
I snapped a salute
Spontaneously
Involuntarily

Why?

Thoughts of friends and family who served

Thoughts of my service

Thoughts of freedom and patriotism

Why -- as I continued my run --
It just felt like the right thing to do
It came naturally
And it felt good
