John J. Morris Post 62 partners with Centennial High to feed families in need

Peoria, AZ

On May 11, 2024, John J. Morris Post 62 in Peoria, Ariz., partnered with the Peoria Centennial High School football team to provide food from Borderlands' Produce on Wheels With-Out Waste (POWWOW) to over 200 families in need. The football team came in two shifts, totaling 32 players to work shoulder-to-shoulder with our veterans. We had a little food left over, so we told the students that taking food home is a great Mother's Day gift.

We always take a little bit inside the post for our members. They are so careful to only take one watermelon or three tomatoes to make sure they leave some for other veterans throughout the day. At end of the day, we notified the football team that we still had a little left for them to come pick up for the school. We always have one veteran who takes a box of food to a disabled Vietnam veteran a couple miles from our location. This was our third distribution this year. We will have two in June with the football team as we have formed a partnership. We even had two active-duty Army members join us, along with Auxiliary, SAL and Riders from the post.

A steady stream of cars filed through as they do not need to leave their car to get their food.
