2024 Memorial Day

Post 2 - Bristol, CT

On the morning of Memorial Day, the Bristol Veterans Council unveiled a new POW/MIA monument in Memorial Boulevard Park. The monument is the third of its kind to be erected in Connecticut, honoring POW/MIA individuals. Members from American Legion Post 2 and Post 209, both part of the Veterans Council, were present.

The morning commenced with Bristol's annual Memorial Day tradition of reading aloud the names of those who have been lost in wars over the years. Joe Caminiti, a 99-year-young World War II Iwo Jima survivor, participated in the reading of the names. Although the rain canceled the parade, the names were still announced. After the ceremony, the people moved across the street to dedicate the POW/MIA table.

Both Legion posts participated with the opening of the POW/MIA monument dedication. The posts also helped raise the funds needed to make it all possible. The monument was dedicated amidst a light rain. Post 2 supplied the sound system and the Missing Man Table for the ceremony.

Veterans' banners were hung along the boulevard. The banners served as a fundraising initiative by the Veterans Community Strong Center to gather support for veterans. Joe Caminiti was honored on one of these banners, which was donated by American Legion Post 2 to commemorate a long-standing member. Over the years, Caminiti has rung the USS Kidd's Captain Bell for the Legion during Bells for Peace, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and Veterans Day ceremonies.
