SAN ANTONIO – (Sept. 15, 2024) – Tailgating is a social event that takes place in the parking lots of stadiums, arenas and other venues before or after events. It typically involves people bringing their own food, drinks and barbecues to share with other attendees.
To bring the tailgate experience to the city’s East Side, Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron 828 hosted a Tailgate Gala featuring the New Orleans Saints vs. the Dallas Cowboys at Fred Brock American Legion Post 828.
Members of the post were able to reserve a tailgate spot for $25. Additionally, the squadron sold food items such as turkey legs, ribs, chicken and sausage on a stick, among other items.
Attendees had the opportunity to watch the game outside on the post’s new 75” TV or inside on the newly acquired 86” TV.
All eyes were glued to the screens as the Saints easily defeated the Cowboys 44–19.
Wendell Nance, the newly elected squadron commander, said the event was a success and encouraged more members to support the event in the future.
“My goal this year is to increase members’ attendance at meetings and participation in activities,” Nance said. “Additionally, to increase our SAL membership and support our post as required.”
Throughout the year, the squadron will conduct fundraisers with a plan to host an event to show their appreciation for all the support it has received from its membership.
The Sons of The American Legion is divided into detachments at the state level and squadrons at the local level. They are permitted flexibility in planning programs and activities to meet their needs, but must remember the SAL's mission: to strengthen the four pillars of The American Legion.
