Highlands American Legion Post 69 and Auxiliary Unit 69 in Avon Park, Fla., hosted a “Kids Drive-In” on April 21, as part of an event to teach children and parents the warning signs of childhood suicide.
GT Motorsports gave families a pit stop demonstration with a race car. Then kids decorated cardboard-box race cars for a screening of Disney Pixar’s “Cars.” The Sebring Air Force JROTC presented the colors, followed by Past Department Commander Dennis Boland announcing, “Start your engines!”
Teddy, a large stuffed bear, sat in a Be the One-themed cardboard race car at the front. Sixteen smaller bears were displayed, representing the estimated number of young people lost to suicide every day.
