Las Cruces squadron conducts flag retirement ceremony

Las Cruces, NM

Joe P. Quesenberry Squadron 10 of the Sons of The American Legion conducted a flag retirement ceremony Oct. 22, 2024, on the campus of Cornerstone Christian Academy in Las Cruces, N.M. This was the first community event for the SAL since the pandemic.
"We are revitalizing our squadron, which has been inactive for some time. As a previous post commander, I volunteered my expertise to lead the squadron," said Squadron Commander William Wight.
Though small in number, Wight is confident the squadron will grow and become an intricate part of the Las Cruces Legion 10 family.
The students attending the ceremony learned the history of the flag and the importance of respectfully retiring our nation's symbol when it is tattered and worn.
Special thanks go out to the Organ Mountain High School Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps honor guard for presenting the flag of our nation and providing overwatch of the flags for disposal.
The squadron is planning another flag retirement ceremony in the coming months at another Las Cruces charter school, as well as in-school instruction led by members, to teach flag etiquette and proper courtesies to the flag.
