SAN ANTONIO – (Dec. 14, 2024) – To spread brotherly, sisterly and neighborly love, the Legionnaires of Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 went door-to-door to donate turkeys to residents in the immediate vicinity of the post.
According to Post Commander Burrell Parmer, the post has been in existence for more than 75 years, and some of the neighbors grew up around it.
“We found it fitting that we continue to share our blessings with our neighbors,” said Parmer, who’s serving his third term as commander.
Parmer said with many lives being touched by programs of the post every year, there is no amount of love or size of turkey too small to give and share.
Distributing turkeys were Service Officer Marcellus Hutchinson and Sergeant-at-Arms Fernando Rover.
“It’s our pleasure to provide some turkeys to those surrounding us,” said Hutchinson. “Our neighbors were very appreciative that we took the time to think about them during the holidays.”
Maintaining strong neighborhood relationships are important because they contribute to a sense of community, allowing people to feel more linked together, Parmer said.
“Essentially, having good neighbors enhances the quality of our community by fostering cooperation and a sense of belonging.”
The post, which received a temporary charter as Post 420-A on Jan. 1, 1946, is named in honor of San Antonio native U.S. Army Sgt. Fred Brock of the 598th Field Artillery Battalion, 92nd Infantry Division, who died in the line of duty at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., on Aug. 18, 1943. On Aug. 23, 1950, the post was granted a full charter and redesignated as Post 828.
Fred Brock Post 828’s mission is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s veterans, their families, the military and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
