After being drafted in 1951, my first stop was Ft. Sheridan, Chicago. We were being issued uniforms, clothing, shots, etc., before being shipped to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. About the third day we were assigned to mess hall duty. There were some on tall ladders, washing the ceiling. Just after lunch, someone dropped a scrub brush that landed on my head, drawing blood. I was sent to the first aid station with blood running down my face. That prompted someone to start saying the first words to “The Detour” song: “There’s a muddy road ahead” only he used the word bloody instead. After being patched up I was sent back to the mess hall and given a fly swatter and can to put dead flies in for the rest of my third day in the Army.
