American Legion Post 374 of Slidell, La., hosts a “Be the One” (BTO) peer to peer support group every third Wednesday of the month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at 2233 Carey Street for people who've experienced trauma. BTO is open to the public.
Peer support groups are a place where you can discuss day-to-day problems with other people who have been through similar, often traumatic, experiences. Support groups do not reduce Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms, but they can help you feel better in other ways. For example, they can give you a sense of connection to other people. Support groups can also help family members or friends who care for someone with PTSD.
The American Legion has elevated BTO as its primary mission, empowering veterans, servicemembers, their family members and civilians to act appropriately when a veteran may be at risk. These events are intended to bring more awareness to the problem while providing resources to those who may be able to help save the life of a veteran. Post 374 expanded that mission to empower the public.
Recently, Post 374 partnered with the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to provide a brief introduction to suicide prevention, “Talk Saves Lives.” Participants learned the common risk factors for suicide, how to spot the warning signs in others and how to keep ourselves, our loved ones and those in our community safe. Post 374 Commander John Runyon believes the most important message to get out there is, “to hold conversations with people to change negative perceptions about people with mental health conditions.”
Rowena Case, a spouse of a veteran who served 20 years, said, “Post 374 hosting 'Talk Saves Lives' training and Be the One are excellent ways to get the community involved.”
The American Legion Post 374 is located at 2233 Carey Street, Slidell, La. There is ample parking behind the post next to the Mason Lodge at 2222 Front Street.
