American flag talk to first-graders

Ocean Springs, MS

I enjoyed, as a member of American Legion Post 42 in Ocean Springs, Miss., giving a 20-minute talk on the American flag to first-graders in West Jackson County, Miss., from a seven-member Baptist school to over 200 in one public school after coordinating with the principal. However, all the schools displayed an American flag and were familiar with the Pledge of Allegiance, which they said every day. When I asked where the farthest American flag on display from here is, one first-grader would say Jackson, another Washington, D.C. Finally, I said, “on the moon”. One little boy on the front row hollered out “No Way!" After holding back my laughter I explained that yes, an astronaut placed an American flag on the moon in 1969.
