At Lima American Legion Post 282, we recognize that the battle doesn’t always end when servicemembers return home. Many veterans face isolation, mental health struggles and the challenges of transitioning to civilian life. That’s why we launched Regiment 282, a groundbreaking program that uses gaming as a tool for connection, camaraderie and support to combat veteran suicide.
Gaming is more than just entertainment - it’s a powerful way to rebuild the bonds of teamwork and brotherhood so many veterans miss after service. Through online gaming events, streaming and community engagement, Regiment 282 provides a safe, welcoming space where veterans can connect, share their experiences and support one another. Whether through cooperative gameplay, competitive tournaments or just talking with friends over a headset, this program ensures that no veteran feels alone in their struggles.
Regiment 282 officially launched on Dec. 21, 2024. We will hold monthly meetings on the last Tuesday of each month at the post. These meetings will provide a hub for veterans to connect, discuss program initiatives and strengthen their sense of community. We are also forming competitive teams for popular esports titles, offering veterans an opportunity to engage in teamwork and friendly competition.
This program has been in development since March 2024, with dedicated fundraising and community support ensuring its success. With the generous support of local businesses and organizations, we are proud to be the first Legion post in New York to launch this initiative.
Beyond gaming, Regiment 282 is about promoting mental health awareness, connecting veterans with resources and fostering open conversations about the challenges they face. It’s about taking action - being there for one another and ensuring that no veteran fights their battles alone.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Regiment CEO Chris Earl for allowing us to bring his vision and mission to our Legion post. His dedication to supporting veterans through gaming laid the foundation for what we are building today. Because of his leadership and commitment, more veterans will find the connections and support they need.
We invite other American Legion posts to join the movement, spread awareness and be part of the solution. Whether through gaming, peer support or simply reaching out to a fellow veteran, we all have a role to play in reducing veteran suicide and saving lives.
Be the one who makes a difference.
