The ceremony began with an opening prayer by former Commander Joseph Martin, setting a respectful tone for the day. Distinguished guests included 8th DEC Otis Baskerville, 8th District Vice Commander Dwight Martin, 8th District Color Bearer Wilbert Jefferson and Horace Lewis, and 8th District Adjutant Derrick Brock, along with officers and members of Post 510.
8th DEC Otis Baskerville acknowledged the veterans’ valor, followed by the presentation of gift bags containing the “Vietnam Veterans Commemoration Lapel Pin” donated by JROTC and Fort Johnson Main Exchange. Post Commander Derrick Brock, on behalf of Post 510, awarded a framed Proclamation of Vietnam Veterans' Commemoration Day signed by President Obama on May 25, 2012, Vietnam Service Medal Lapel Pin, and a matching keychain further symbolizing the gratitude and respect held for their service. The veterans who were honored include SGM J.T. Smith, SFC Mike Smith, Gracie Clayton and Thomas Lapsley.
The event transitioned into a celebration with a feast of fried fish and salads, prepared by members. It was a day of gratitude and camaraderie, reflecting the strong bond between the veterans and their community. The Vietnam Veteran Commemoration Day at Post 510 was a memorable tribute to the service and sacrifices of Vietnam veterans.
