SAN ANTONIO – (Dec. 5, 2024) – To support the elderly in local nursing homes for the Christmas holiday, Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 donated 40 pairs of pajamas and 80 pairs of socks to the Normandy Terrace Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and Pecan Valley Rehabilitation Center located on the East Side.
“Post 828 is a pillar on the East Side, said Post Chaplain Patricia Wimberly, a retired U.S. Air Force nurse. “It is important for us to look out for our elders, especially those who are residents of nursing homes.”
This will be the second year the post has donated to nursing homes.
“We want the residents to know that they are not forgotten,” said Post Commander Burrell Parmer. “Providing something as simple as a pair of pajamas and some socks can significantly bolster the emotional well-being of the residents.”
According to Parmer, it is common for residents to feel isolated and lonely, and providing some comfort items can reinforce residents’ sense of self-worth and reduce feelings of isolation.
The post’s next activity will be its Project Shoes Giveaway in January, where the post will provide 50 students from local high school and elementary schools with a pair of new shoes to start off the year.
The mission of Fred Brock Post 828 is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s veterans, their families, the military and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
