On May 19, 2024, the Post 21 family joined dozens of enthusiastic patriots in a heart-warming ceremony to welcome home a group of Vietnam veterans as they returned from their Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. The event took place at Dallas Love Field, where family and friends gathered to celebrate and honor the veterans' service. The welcoming crowd created a festive and patriotic atmosphere with marching music, hand-made posters, red, white and blue light-up necklaces and waving flags.
Among those who welcomed the veterans home was a local U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC), who stood and rendered salutes in recognition and support of the returning heroes. Adding to the emotional scene, two women drove over 90 minutes to surprise their husbands and celebrate their service. Several parents brought their children to honor their grandparents, instilling respect and admiration for military heroes in the younger generation.
Post 21 had a special interest in this particular Honor Flight as our very own A.B. Martin, a Bronze Star recipient from his time in Vietnam with the U.S. Army, was returning on the flight. A group of Post 21 family members and A.B.’s wife, children and grandchildren surprised him when he exited the secure area of the airport and walked through the lines to cheers of “thank you, we love you, we are proud of you and welcome home!"
The Honor Flight program is dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials of the respective war(s) they fought in at no cost to the veterans. This particular flight was significant as it focused on honoring Vietnam veterans, ensuring they received the recognition and gratitude they deserve for their service and sacrifices.
