Again this year, the varsity football team from Creekview High School in Cherokee County, Ga., spent the day staining disabled veteran ramps as a team-building project. Curtis Carrol, who is part of the Creekview football team supporters, worked with Jim Lindenmayer, service officer for American Legion Post 45 in Canton, to identify the projects for the team.
Our program had built both ramps. One was a new build for an Afghanistan Army combat engineer. The second ramp and deck was a renewal project for a Vietnam Army veteran who has a disabled son.
Both projects had been built by Cherokee County veterans through local Home Depot Foundation grants.
The football team split into two different groups in order to complete both projects on the same day. The teams were led and guided on the projects by Legion members from Post 45, including combat veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The post provided all stain and brushes for the project along with lunch for the 35 players, Lindenmayer went on to add. There is one more ramp needing staining that is still waiting; it will be tackled later in September during fall break.
