For the past several years, Veterans in Cherokee County Georgia have come out to help other Veterans in need of home repairs to include mobility ramps. Several Veterans from American Legion Post 45 in Canton, Ga partnered with members of the Marine Corps League detachment 1311 in Woodstock and Arrow Exterminator's Veteran team to design and build ramps for a disabled Afghanistan Combat Engineer and an aging Vietnam Air Force Veteran.
The grants for the projects were provided by Home Depot Foundation and partially by Habitat for Humanity in the case of the Afghanistan Veteran. According to American Legion Post Service Officer and project lead, Jim LIndenmayer, these two projects were identified through our annual outreach program to the community. The projects were scoped out and designed and build during the weekdays as our team of Veteran volunteers are able to do projects during the week. In all it took several weeks total to build both projects as weather complicated some of the anticipated work days.
In addition to the Veteran volunteers, both projects got corporate assistance in the case of the Afghanistan Veteran project it was from Arrow Exterminators and in the case of the again Vietnam Veteran it was from Builders Insurance and ARGOS concrete who donated the final walkway from the ramp to the road.
We are very pleased and happy that we are able to do these types of projects that help Veterans in need and we are grateful to the Home Depot team in Canton, GA as well as the Home Depot Foundation who have donated over $200,000 in home repair grants since we started this program, Lindenmayer added.
